Winter Sun Escapes, Shoulder Season Travel, and Workations: HomeToGo Reveals its 2022-2023 Autumn/Winter Travel Forecast

Luxembourg, 26 September 2022 - HomeToGo SE (Frankfurt Stock Exchange: HTG), a marketplace with the world's largest selection of vacation rentals, today released its 2022-2023 European Autumn/Winter Travel Forecast. In this trend outlook, HomeToGo observes an uplift in European search demand for international getaways during the autumn shoulder season, increased interest for winter sun destinations by remote workers, and sustained desire to book vacation rentals amidst rising costs of living.

Dr. Patrick Andrae, Co-founder & CEO, HomeToGo: "After a summer marked by high demand for vacation rentals and international getaways, we were eager to learn more about what’s in store for the autumn and winter seasons. We know the desire to travel can overcome a lot of obstacles and we see the resilience of vacation rentals this autumn-winter as travelers continue to crave authentic and affordable getaways. We also see the lasting impact of flexible working policies on increasing travel for the autumn shoulder season travel, as well as an anticipated busy winter high season ahead.”

With insights gathered from travelers using HomeToGo to book autumn/winter vacations, as well as an external survey of 2,500 travelers from five key European markets, including Germany, Spain, Italy, France, and the United Kingdom, the key trends and developments include:

  • Busier autumn and winter for travel: Vacation rental searches in HomeToGo’s five key European markets are up 38% year-over-year for stays between September and March, signaling a strong travel season ahead.
  • Digital nomad hotspots are seeing the largest uplift in search demand: Winter sun destinations including Ibiza, Spain (+173% vs. 2021 in searches), Lanzarote, Spain (+170%) and Malta (+200%) are on the rise as this winter season’s go-to workation destinations.
  • Autumn international travel rises as a key shoulder season: During what is typically a quieter travel season, HomeToGo has observed a +31% annual uplift in international searches by Europeans for trips between September and November.
  • 40% of surveyed travelers state their travel plans are not impacted by rising costs:  Despite rising costs of living, more than  one-third of travelers do not plan to sacrifice on travel.
  • Accommodations are one of the most resilient travel categories amidst inflation: When looking to save money, travelers are more likely to look for cost savings on transportation (e.g. flights), food and drink, or activities ahead of opting for less expensive accommodations.
